Mountain Area Medical Airlift, better known as MAMA has provided critical care transport to Mission Hospital since 1986. Our fleet of 2 air ambulances is fully equipped to safely transport newborns and children in critical condition, as well as adults.
In the mountainous region of WNC, Mountain Area Medical Airlift allows us to reach those in need, and reach them quickly.
The Need for Growth
Currently, the 2 MAMA helicopters are not reaching the full geographic western North Carolina region. Additionally, in 2012 MAMA was unable to respond to 150 calls within their reach because both helicopters were already on other life-saving missions.
The Vision for Expansion
Our goal is to add a third helicopter to the MAMA fleet. This addition would increase the availability of this critical service as well as expand its reach. Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, & North McDowell counties would be added to the list of easily accessed counties.
Building hangars in Burnsville, Hendersonville, and Franklin (moving the Asheville-stationed helicopter to Hendersonville) would position MAMA to be able to provide 20 minute “to the scene” response to the most people within the wide WNC region.
A Call to Action
Mission Hospital plans to grow the services, reliability, accessibility and capabilities of the MAMA fleet in the coming years. Your generous support can make that possible.
